Neck Pain is a Complicated Problem
Although there are many different types of neck pain, most neck pain is really the same. The pain may be coming from different sources, such as a herniated disc, stenosis, arthritis, muscle spasms, etc, but the underlying problem is similar in most cases.
Neck pain is like an angry elephant. One person is getting stomped on, another smacked by the tail, another stabbed by a tusk, and yet another whipped by the trunk. Each of these people experience a different sort of pain, but the underlying cause is the angry elephant. There’s only one cure for this situation: calm down the elephant! Similarly, a painful neck can have many different symptoms. Some people feel the effects of a herniated disc, others get muscle spasms, others get pinching and grinding from the joints, while others get shooting headaches. Each of these various pains have one underlying cause: dysfunctional movement that is placing excessive force into the neck and irritating the tissues. The cure for each is the same: improve the dysfunctional movement which is causing excessive force on the neck tissues.

There are a number of things to understand. The first thing to understand is that your neck is the victim, not the culprit. Your neck is may be what hurts, but it is hurting because it is being forced to do more than it designed to do. Specifically, your upper neck (the area right below your skull) and your upper back are supposed to be very flexible and should allow for more than 50% of your neck’s motion. However, most people are incredibly tight in the upper neck and upper back, which forces the neck itself to move way too much. This excessive movement damages the tissues of the neck and causes pain.
This excessive demand on the neck creates dysfunctions and weakness within the neck itself. Joints become irritated to the point that they get stuck, muscles tear and scar, discs herniate, and nerves become inflamed.
In addition, tightness in the shoulder blades forces you into a poor posture which puts severe stress on the neck and adds to the irritation. Without improving your shoulder blades and your posture, your neck will never improve.

You Need a Comprehensive Solution
The only way to really resolve neck pain is to manage all the issues at once. You need a comprehensive approach to your neck pain. The Neck Pain Solution is just that.
- We must address the underlying causes of the excessive demand on your neck. Specifically we must address your stiff upper neck, upper back, and shoulder blades. These regions are treated in a systematic manner by your physical therapist and you will be given specific exercises to improve these stiff regions on your own.
- We must address the dysfunctions and weaknesses in your neck itself. Again, your neck will be treated in a systematic manner by your physical therapist and your will be given specific exercises to resolve these dysfunctions and improve the strength of your neck.
- We must address the injured and damaged tissues in your neck by reducing their inflammation and helping them to heal. This is done with ice, rest, and specific motions you will perform during your exercises.
- We must enhance your body’s ability to heal and decrease inflammation. This is accomplished in three ways. First, you must follow a healthy diet to provide your body with the nutrients necessary to rebuild your tissues. A poor diet not only lacks the necessary nutrients you need, but also increases inflammation, making healing slower and worsening pain. Second, a consistent exercise program that encourages your body to release growth hormone is extremely beneficial for healing because growth hormone creates the necessary hormonal environment within your body to achieve rapid healing. And third, a consistent sleeping pattern is necessary because your body heals at night and you must take advantage of this fact to recover from your neck pain.
- We must address the behavioral and emotional components of your pain. All types of pain, and particularly neck pain, can become chronic pain that lasts for years if it is not managed appropriately. Your mental outlook on your pain and the way you respond to it can make or break your ability to recover and heal from neck pain. These issues will be addressed in detail during the program.

The Pain Solution Series is a series of five-week programs designed to resolve, improve, and prevent pain in specific regions of the body. The Pain Solution Series is a whole new way to do physical therapy:
- Focus on function, not pain. Treating pain has never worked, but enhancing motion and function has always been the key to resolving pain. These five-week programs enhance motion and function, providing the necessary environment for eliminating pain.
- One-to-one ratio of therapist to client. Each client receives the complete treatment from a single, highly-trained physical therapist. The therapist spends the entire session working with just the one client.
- An individualized yet systematic approach. We leave nothing to chance by working through a system to enhance the movement of all muscles and joints related to your pain. But we individualize the system for each client’s specific needs. The result is superior results.
- A specified time-frame. You will see significant results in five weeks or else you will know that this approach is not going to work for you. Maintaining a specified time-frame and number of sessions keeps everyone on task (both client and therapist), improves motivation and compliance with home exercises and the treatment plan, and helps to identify those clients who will not improve with this approach to treatment.
- A holistic approach. Nutritional and behavioral components of healing, along with exercise, movement therapy, and orthopedic manual therapy to enhance motion and coordination, are addressed as part of a comprehensive approach to treatment.
