The Knee Pain Solution
The knee is the middle joint between two often dysfunctional joints: the hip and the ankle. Often times the knee itself is the site of pain but not the cause of the problem. The ankles and hips are usually both tight and weak, leading to excessive stress being placed on the knees. The knees are not designed to rotate very much, but the hips are. Often times the hips are tight and don't rotate enough, causing the knees to be forced to rotate too much. This excessive rotate places stress on the ligaments (ACL, MCL, LCL, PCL), the menisci, and the muscles (patellar tendon). Knee cap pain (Patellofemoral Joint Dysfunction) is caused by the same dysfunctions above and below the knee. The knee cap (patella) can't track in its groove properly if the bones above and below are twisting and rotating improperly. In addition, weakness of the hips causes the knees to collapse inward when they are loaded during running or turning activities and this places excessive stress on the structures listed above. Ankle tightness and weakness creates similar problems for the knees. To read more about potential foot and ankle problems or hip problems that can lead to knee injuries, follow the links.
Treating the Root Cause of Your Symptoms
The treatment for your symptoms will vary depending on the actual pain you are experiencing. But the treatment for the cause of your symptoms will be the same for each of these dysfunctions: learn how to move better. We use a combination of Functional Manual Therapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), therapeutic exercises, and Functional Cryotherapy to treat your knee pain and then treat the dysfunctions in your ankles and hips.
"Core" Stability
Everyone knows the importance of having a strong 'core' to help stabilize the lower back, but few people realize the importance of a similar muscular function in stabilizing the hips and the ankles. These 'core' muscles of the hips and ankles are the key to allowing the knee to move properly from a stable base. Our techniques to enhance posture and movement make achieving stability much easier. Specifically, PNF can facilitate the stability of your hips and ankles like no other technique available. And our techniques to facilitate the function of the deep, 'core,' muscles are decades ahead of the popular trends of today.
You Must Be Actively Involved
The only way you will ever get better is if you are actively involved in your treatment. Although our magic hands can change your body, improve your movement, and reduce your pain, you are the only one who can learn to move better, change the way you treat your body, and keep up with your exercises. We are very successful and get excellent results for our patients, but that is only because our patients know they are more than 50% responsible for their recovery. We are not into failure, and neither should you be!
